  He is actually a typical student who has not much interest towards the language. With a relatively weak foundation,I still recall his struggle in completing "Journey to the West" novel review. I started teaching him from January this year.During the SA1, he scored 47% overall for Chinese. Although disappointed, Samuel's parents did not quit the tuition halfway. They continued to have faith in me. Samuel's poor performance could be due to the limited number of lessons which 1 per week. However he is one who is "academically-conscious". Nearing the exams, I increased the number of lessons so as to prepare him.(Started work 6 weeks prior to exams). This led to his remarkable improvement from 47 to 67. This shows that sometimes the result do not come as fast which may instead take 6 months to one year to surface. If their parents had stopped the lessons 6 months ago, they may not be able to see Samuel progress.  Normally he is not fluent in speaking Chinese, speaking in bits and pieces and afraid of making wrong  tonation of pinyin. Surprisingly, he did exceedingly well for the Oral component this year even standing out as second best in class. From this year onwards, the syllabus for Chinese Oral took a turn to picture discussion rather than the usual topic discussion. Due to intense practice with me, he probably sat for the exam with new found confidence, with knowledge of what to expect. Thus, this gave him favour with the examiner amongst his peers who could be uunfamiliar with the new syllabus.

Usually a jump of 4 grades need a time of two years. However Samuel has surpass normal expectations and make vast improvement within half the time. Hence, students with weak foundations need at least two lessons per week to be able to improve. Another alternative will be to go for intensive lessons during the holidays.

  Although James has a stronger foundation, he is the type who has lower expectations . Nevertheless, he  improved,due to the pull up in paper 2 component.

Fairfield Methodist Sec: outstanding result of 82percent/ diligient,improving student

     Jun De from Fairfield Methodist Sec Sch has outdone himself and achieved outstanding result. He scored 82 percent overall for his Chinese making him the best and most improved student i have among the rest. Even Jun De was apalled by his results this time round as it was his first time getting so high during his years of schooling. His paper 1 component was his forte this time round with 17/20 for situational(公函）and 32/40 for composition. I feel that the main factor for his success is due to of his diligience. During the holidays, he did alot of Chinese related assignments which consist of books"非常阅读" that the teachers personally written for the syllabus. Every page consists of interesting passages and innovative questions specially catered for their age to catch their interest and attention. These painstakingly written worksheets are aimed to polish their comprehension skills. Those who may want to purchase the book for your children, it is not for sale anywhere at all unfortunately. The school is very strict about their publications. I would like to applaud Fairfield Methodist dedicated team of teachers for this first-of-its-kind education material which no other school elsewhere has done it.

  On the other hand, i got another student, Zhen Wei who has not reached Jun De's pinnacle in Chinese. He does not have interest towards Chinese. Due to little exposure to the language, he has tremendous difficulty in writing especially. But much to my delight he made improvement and for the first time passed his paper 1. Although with the increased demand put upon by the school to restrict the situational writing to formal"gong han" but he still managed to pull it off with the news article review as his preferred composition question. It is heartening that he put what i thought him about the organisation techniques of writing article review into the exam. I hope that this little result will serve as a stepping stone for him to do better.

  From my past years of teaching Sec 2 to 3 students from various traditional-English schools i.e. 5 from ACS(I/Barker Rd),few from MGS,SJI or Fairfield methodist,they have something unfortunate in common.That is most of them do not have an interest in Chinese.(no offence given)  The extremely weak ones desire to pass.The relatively strong ones from top classes would yearn for an A1 to create the perfect report card. Those are the two categories of students.

  More often than not,they will give up halfway when they do not see their fruits of labour. They confidence towards Chinese will sink to an all time low especially at Sec 3 when they are at the brink of  O levels either next yr or at the end of the year. Why did they,despite all their hard work, failed to reach their desired grade?Below are some of the possible reasons:

1.They may have "made a dash" too late
Some students only start to put in effort in the language upon reaching a crucial time such as in sec 3.Language often is unlike a Humanities or Mathematics subject where if you memorised or practiced hard enough,you can improve by heaps and bounds. Unknown to many,from my past experience,the average time needed for somebody of a B4-C5 standard to reach an A1 is 1 and a half years.Yes!it's that long.

 2.Their foundation is weak and language exposure is limited
Many of the students I have mentioned earlier come from english-speaking homes and schools,where Chinese is only applied at work. Without a firm grasp on basic linguistic techniques, they may find that Chinese just gets harder and harder everytime they study. There comes a point that he finds that no mater how hard he or she try,they're not going to make it...might as well Give UP!

 Firstly, when teaching them, i will overcome their disinterest towards Chinese. With methods like surfing the net to search for essay ideas, watching videos and using webcam, Chinese becomes a more "lively" subject that are not just constrained towards doing 课本and 作业. Only after changing their attitude towards Chinese,will they have the interest and morale to continue to srive for their targetted grades in Chinese.

Is Sec 2 Chinese Difficult?

If you are in Sec 2, you still have another 2 yrs before you complete your O levels.But what you are doing during that will have a great effect on your following years.It is a time where you need to:

1. know Interest (to choose your subjects you wanna take)
2. Consider transferring school (IP program)
3. Reconsider taking Higher Chinese or Chinese

So I could say Sec 2 is a important year indeed. Academic results play an important part in those above mentioned 3 actions. When you are asked to choose your subject combination, the first thing they will look out for is your results. Fair enough, the school might even opt you for 7 subj. combination, if they think you have difficulty managing 8.So to stand a chance for a position in your prefered stream,be it art or science,work hard in your studies.

Towards the end of the year it is a window of transition.If your child's results are exceptionally well and think that he or she will thrive better in another school, you could consider putting he or she in the IP program.This gives the child the option to bypass O levels and enter the A level Curriculum.My students like Jilian and Shu En have Chinese to owe to,helping them to get an transfer to their desired school.Jilian transferred to ACS international and Shu En transferred from MGS to SOTA. The language pulled their overall grades up hence increasing the chance of being admitted by the IP schools.Hence you can see,Chinese like other subjects deserve attention and bring you to competetive position whether for subject combi. or a place in a school.
Next most schools will set the exam papers for Sec 2 exceptionally difficult, with the aim of separating those who could not cope with the demands of higher chinese and those who can. Hence usually during Sec 2,students who perform poorly will  drop out to Express Chinese and those who did well in Express could move up to Higher chinese.At the of the Sec 4,2 bonus points off  L1R5 will be given.

Furthermore,it is advisable to build a strong language foundation in the lower secondary years. Your upper Sec years will have you trying to adapt to the heavy duty subjects like the Pure Sciences,a maths,POA,Pure Humanities etc.You would need to spend time studying the content,having a tendency to neglect the languages.So prepare early folks!

Then,is Sec 1 Chinese difficult?

    Upon reaching secondary school, everything takes a turn and academics increase in difficulty.Chinese language is no exception.

  Especially when your child is entering one of the "top academic schools" like RI and SAP schools with a strong emphasis on Chinese,he or she needs to be mentally prepared for a more intensive drilling. For example, in the latter schools i mentioned,especially for Higher Chinese, a typical topical test of Chinese may consists of like 20 to 30 challenging proverbs or idioms together with characters they have picked up from the textbook. For exams, schools combine the 100 proverbs they learnt into their exam scope.Imagine a hundred of mind-staggering proverbs(成语) all tested during exam,how stress can one be if he or she has a weak foundation or no interest in Chinese?


   Ryan is a very tenacious boy who has good work attitude. During lessons, he will not detest doing compos. Just like a normal student,he dislike the laboriousness and banalness of writing. He resort to typing instead which isn't any compromise since compo allow use of e-dicitonaries and pinyin.   Ryan takes every practice seriously and sees it as an opportunity to improve on his work. With accurate techniques taught,he is able to reap his fruits of labour in the recent year-end paper 1 exam.  This is the type of end-product i hope to produce when u send your child to my tuition.

Results of "O" level Express Chinese 2010

After months of hard work, my current Sec4 Higher Chinese students(last year Sec 3) have reaped what they sowed. They took the Express Chinese exam last year and prior to that I have given them extra lessons to fully prepare them for this exam.These are their results:

-Jing Quan from Cresent Girls scored an A1 and distinction for Oral

She's a diligient and disciplined student.Due to the fact that she doesn't come from a chinese speaking background, she might be weak in that language. But she never fail to show her seriousness in learning by asking questions and paying attention to my lessons though they might sometimes be 3-hour long . I enjoy teaching her too, giving her 1-to1 individual lessons despite the fact that our timings always clashes with each other. She scored C5 in her normal school exam,her B3 grade for "O" level is definitely a breakthrough for herself,surpassing her normal performance. During the six months with her, I feel heartened that her Chinese Language standard has improved by heaps and bounds with credit given to her diligience.

She is also another hardworking and promising student with high potential. The advantage is that she comes from a Chinese-speaking background so she has the language foundation there. She comes to my house for lessons once a week as she is always busy with CCA(badminton) committments and other subject tuition. Though she does not really drill and practice the comprehension or compositions segments, she would treasure her lesson time asking me questions to clear her doubts and  she does read up alot, gaining exposure. Her main help I guess would be the sessions I asked her to practice Oral conversations on Webcam. This greatly reduce her tendency to get tongue-tied whenever she feels nervous facing the oral examiners. It increases her confidence as she reviews her webcam videos every now and then to spot for errors in her expressions,gesture and speech. The mistakes discussed will then be avoided the next time round we do a "filming". This goes on and on till she could reach near perfection in speaking.Impressing her examiners with her flawless speech and eloquence on the actual day of exam then come naturally for her,giving her the "distinction" on her "o" level cert.

O level sudents' profile

Shi En who is a student at MGS and Jeannes who comes from Orchid Park Secondary came to enrol in my lessons during the june holidays.They were getting mediocre marks for Chinese ranging from C5-C6.They decided that they needed help in order to get at least a merit which is B for the O levels.Although they have already sat for the written papers, which form bulk of the marks, they feel they are not prepared for the last component which is the Oral examination.
   They came forward separately,and enrol in the small group tuition with emphasis put on Oral definitely.They were taught the techniques to score well and overcome anxiety on the actual day,at the same time with the help of multimedia,(videos,webcam,skype) overcome the fear of speaking out,even if you feel incompetent in your Chinese.These proves reliable as these students who are "putting their last gamble" in the oral component, will of course feel nervous prior to the exam. I did manage to spot questions relating to the hottest news reports during that period.For example, i did discuss the problem of eating and drinking in MRT carriages during one of the lessons and very fortunate for Jeannes the day she was assign to take, the exact question came out.Though Shi En got a different question, she also did well enough to pull her overall marks to  a B3. She was worried that she had problems just to pass the Language. But nevertheless both of them "pulled through" and got a B4.Quite a remarkable performance, within such a short time span. If they had come to me earlier, they got a high possibility of attaining a higher grade,perhaps, an A2 or B3.So parents prepare your child early for the O levels,best is a year before the major examination.Sec 3 is the cut-off time you can not afford to prepare after. Overwelmed By Chinese?

IT and Multimedia?(Starting this Nov and Dec Holidays)

Every student would be encouraged to bring their laptops to lessons for innovative learning during group tuition.For home tuition, a home desktop is needed. With the liveliness and animation PC can bring, students can concentrate better especially those with a weak concentration span.

Who needs it?

There are 4 types of students.

a). There are students who do not have confidence,resulting in stutters ,nodding and shaking of heads or yes and no answers.They also do not elaborate,tend to give one-sentence answer that is being asked only.If the students are going to take their PSLE and O level,how are they going to do well?

I specialise in these type of problems.Firstly, i seek to raise their confidence by opening their hearts so that they could express their feelings.After that,find their strengths and talents to build their self-esteem.

With my 30 yrs experience of teaching,i can correct the students' mistakes using webcam,video and voice recording. During their self-study, they could even adjust their mistakes by themselves. If they are able to overcome the fear of facing the camera,their confidence are better than most people their age.

But all these can only be done by having 10-20 intensive lessons. After the holidays,who knows your child will change to become a totally new person with high self-esteem.

b). For students who are hyperactive with a short concentration span and hate Chinese, they might have attended numerous tuition centres and classes in the past, but they are still not showing any improvement.Recommended:(8 lessons)

c). Gifted students and fast-learners who ace in other subjects except Chinese.They are not able to breakthrough their average results .Their standard could not reach the school demands.This can be seen from students who have difficulty comprehending higher order comprehension passages.

This goes the same with Chinese articles 《少年文摘》or 《读者》.Hwa chong Sec 1 students and students from other SAP schools have do a project based on those articles which will be counted in the CA.

Another example would be gifted students from schools like RGS might not have the depth of Chinese literacy to comprehend the above mentioned passages.Thus other ordinary group tuition would not help as they do not have the resources to cater this need to them.He or she would need a personal tutor to help them with this need.Recommended:(4-8 lessons)

d) Then for those students who scores A1 for all subjects except for Chinese.Is Chinese important for them?

Of course!Firstly,the overall score would be pulled down by the borderline pass or even fail in Chinese. The student would not be able to go to the top class or desirable stream or even school in the case of students opting for IP/IB transfer.Applications or scholarships also take into consideration the overall result.Among my students,there's a lot who are from the third category.They belong to premier schools like ACS(I),MGS,Crescent Girls',RGS,RI and Hwa Chong.These students show the most improvement after tuition,usually about half a year later.recommended:(8-12 lessons)

Other than IT, how do you cover exam syllabus for PSLE and O level?

To prepare for O levels oral, I have a collection of past year papers and top school prelim exam papers for students to practice and analyse.

To prepare for PSLE,oral is one of the most important components of the exam.Its an easy way to pull the overall score up.I have passages and pictures from top sch notes and CD-Roms.Web cam and video recording would effectively increase the confidence of students to face the examination. They would also know their weakness in tonation,pronunciation and speech after each recording so that they could adjust to the correct one.

PSLE Revision:

Composition techniques are imparted.For example,students would learn how to start and end their compositions with style and creativity so as to stand out from the rest to add value to content.Theme should be included to enhance the meaning of the essay.Good phrases,idioms and proverbs will be given to students for memorising so as to strengthen the language component of the essay.(not only beneficial to essay writing but also to comprehension and Oral)

Sec 3 Higher Chinese(How to improve Oral in Exam?)

One type of students have problems using the useful notes the teacher give them.They do not know how to "digest" them. The contents must be used in a flexible manner,according to situations and not in a rigid manner.If they come for lessons with their notes i am able to use it to their advantage, in a variety of purposes.

Next type of students have a misconception that reading a passage fast equals to fluency but it is completely opposite.Most likely the student have no rhythm and expression when reading.Nervousness cause repetitions in phrases,or stuttering.

A lot of top schools especially SAP schools do not carry out preparation on oral exams during the holidays. At most the teachers would just give them some notes to study. The schools feel that there is not a need for students to be adequately prepared as oral is easy.But there are some who have a weak foundation in Chinese and others who can write beautifully but could not express their thoughts in speech.They are not fluent enough and have inappropriate pauses in their conversations.A strong knowledge of current affairs is also needed for a distinction in Oral.

Written paper

Writing skills and summary techniques will be taught.Many SAP schools have their exam papers set to an extremely high standard higher than that of O level, raising concern over students who failed Higher Chinese in SA1.Holidays is a good time to strengthen the language pillar so as to raise confidence in the students to empower them to face the tests and exams when school reopens.

PSLE Oral Examination(how to improve?)
Conversation:Sec 4/P6 who are very shy and not expressible,do not know how to elaborate their points.
Reading: there would be some people who are weak in articulation and tonation of characters and there is some who have a limited vocabulary resulting in them skipping a lot of words during reading,thus reducing fluency.Some other students are caused by fear of opening their mouths to articulate the words properly,havin the "Jay chou" accent.Here during lessons i can correct them using webcam and voice recording.

Importance of individual or small grp tuition


In the coming Sept holidays, i will offer 4/8 tailor-made intensive lessons with the objective of meeting targets in the SA2 Exam. The highlight would be a 9-10 intensive lessons for those students preparing for major exams(PSLE,"O" level).Therefore, it is important for lessons to be effective so as to meet the academic demands of the student.(homework,assignments like newspaper reviews,common tests and finally the exams)
For students with short concentration span or who needs individual attention in the language it is best to go for group size of 1-2.And very few tuition centres or tutors provide that kind of lessons.But i firmly believe if you,parents are paying for tuition,you should maximise the worth of every lesson down to each minute.Just by topping up on the fees you are able to allow your child to get maximum attention and care and even a more conducive environment for learning.So why not go for a top up for quality and get a small class size?




For P6 students,minimum requirement would be at least an A for the prelims Chinese.With 4 weeks to go to PSLE,time is very packed and lessons will be focused on exam techniques and polishing the confidence level rof that student to achieve high A or A* in PSLE.For Sec 4 students taking O level,the minimum requirement would be at least B4-C5.Like that of the PSLE, lessons conducted is to raise the confidence level of the students and on effective exam techniques.
